Williams was back again on Friday for an in-home visit with the Dozier family. It was different from his previous trips.
“Normally we just talk about life in general,” Perry Dozier Sr., Dozier’s father and head coach, said. “This time he had a presentation and showed us a couple of videos. He was mainly trying to help us understand what (P.J.'d) place would be if he chooses North Carolina.”
During the visit, Dozier rescheduled his UNC official visit to Oct. 3. The Tar Heels tip-off their season with “Late Night with Roy” and the football team hosts Virginia Tech that weekend.
“They already have some stuff going on so we thought it would be a good time,” Dozier Sr. explained. “We’re just grateful for the chance and opportunity to have coaches like Roy Williams in our house. The next thing is the (official) visit – we’re looking forward to it.”
Though the Dozier family has done a lot of research on North Carolina and knows quite a bit about it, Williams’s presentation provided additional context.
“They showed us the history of the school,” Dozier Sr. said. “It was really awesome watching some of the former players that came through the program. We got to see the fans and how they respond to the team. It got us in the moment like we were actually there.”
Williams also addressed Dozier’s desire to play point guard and UNC’s depth chart.
“It’s important that wherever he goes, he plays the point,” said Dozier Sr. “Not solely at the point, but mostly at the point. But he can play on the court with other point guards. He (Williams) talked about what position they expected him to play. He’ll be able to play some point and switch to the two and move around as needed.”
Dozier Sr. said Williams didn’t have to mention how he’s used multiple guard lineups in the past, because “we know, we’ve done our research.”
Overall, Dozier Sr. said his family felt good at the visit’s conclusion.
“It went great,” Dozier Sr. said. “It was really neat that we got the opportunity to speak a little bit more about the recruitment, and clarify any questions we had. Each time we meet with him it gets better and better. I think we get to know each other a little more. P.J. and Coach Williams get to make a better connection every time."
“He told us stories, all of them are funny and he keeps your attention,” he continued. “He talked about everything from how he became a coach, how he sent his kids off to school and how Dean Smith sent him out to recruit Michael Jordan.”
Dozier’s last scheduled visit is to South Carolina at the end of October. Once that visit is complete, the family will sit down and make a decision.
“Hopefully we can get it done before our season starts,” the father said. “It’d be nice to have that out way.”
