UNC Offers Fla. Athlete

Jessie Liptrot had somewhat of a prophecy on Monday night.

“My brother asked, If I could go to any school, which one would I pick?” the 6-foot, 175-pound athlete from Neptune Beach (Fla.) Fletcher said. “I said, ‘Honestly, I kind of like North Carolina.’”

Less than 24 hours later, a major step in fulfilling that prophecy was made.

“One of my teammates, Kalif Jackson, I saw him in the hallway and he told me ‘You need to find Coach [Josh] Corey,’” Liptrot said. “I saw Coach Corey walk past me, so I stopped him. He told me to call Coach [Dan] Disch.”

Almost immediately, Liptrot phoned Disch, who recruits the Jacksonville area of Florida for UNC.

“[Disch] said ‘That was a heck of a run Friday night and I really like the way you’ve played,’” Liptrot said. “He was like, ‘I want you to have an open mind, but I want to let you know that you have an offer from North Carolina.’”

Liptrot adds UNC to an offer list that already included UAB, Akron, Marshall, and Western Kentucky.

“North Carolina is No. 1 on my chart right now,” Liptrot said. “Coach Disch came down in the spring and that’s when he started recruiting me. I really, really like him. When we first talked, I felt the connection right away.”

Liptrot grew up a fan of Florida. But through his research during the recruiting process, UNC became a school he really liked.

“My brother goes to college up around that area [Mars Hill], so North Carolina is right by him,” Liptrot said. “And then one night, I was bored and on the internet and I was looking at quarterbacks and receivers highlights. The quarterback from North Carolina, Marquise Williams, caught my eye. And then a receiver, who I think was a punt returner, [Ryan Switzer], he had some nice highlights. I was like ‘Dang, these guys are nice.’ That’s when I started to look at the tight end that they had.”

Disch hasn’t gone into detail about which position UNC is recruiting Liptrot for, but he did mention cornerback. He also mentioned getting Liptrot to Chapel Hill for a visit.

“He really wanted me to come up and watch the game on Oct. 4,” Liptrot said. “I definitely should be able to.”

UNC hosts Virginia Tech on Oct. 4.

Florida is the only school that Liptrot has visited.

A starter since his sophomore season, Liptrot plays running back, slot receiver, and cornerback for Fletcher. After three games, he has over 300 all-purpose yards and five interceptions. He has returned two of his picks for touchdowns.
