Jennings Playing Waiting Game

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. --- In addition to supportive messages on Twitter, receivers coach Gunter Brewer has provided Jonathan Jennings status updates on a possible North Carolina scholarship offer.

“He likes the direction I’m going,” the 2016 receiver said. “The way he makes it sound, if I just continue to do what I’m doing, I think they should be offering.

“The same goes for other schools like NC State, ECU, and Purdue.”

Jennings, a 6-foot-3, 188-pounder from Charlotte Latin, is waiting patiently for his first scholarship offer.

Jennings’s prospects to land scholarship offers took a hit when a late spring injury prohibited him from camping at schools in June. He suffered a MCL sprain while participating at VTO camp.

Although not 100-percent, Jennings was healthy enough to attend UNC’s July camp.

“It’s always better going up against better corners than I usually do [in practice] and just seeing how well I fare,” Jennings said. “Since I was a little hurt, it was good to see where I’m actually at.

“The intensity is always high over there with Coach [Gunter] Brewer and [Larry] Fedora.”

Jennings, who attended the UNC-Duke football game last fall, has been attempting to return to Chapel Hill this football season. Although he hasn’t been successful yet, he figures to visit for at least one of UNC’s upcoming home games.

“I was trying to go two weeks ago for the San Diego State game, but my plans got messed up because my dad was out of town,” Jennings said. “So I went to NC State [vs. Old Dominion] with Austin Kendall and some of my friends. I got to see their game, which was the ‘Blackout Game,’ to see how they play.”

Jennings did see UNC play live last Saturday. As a guest of receivers coach Donnie Kirkpatrick, Jennings was in Greenville to see East Carolina host UNC.

Through his travels, three in-state schools have emerged as favorites.

“Right now, it would be NC State, UNC, and ECU as my top schools,” Jennings said. “I really have the same connections with the coaching staffs. There are similar personalities with the receivers coaches – high intensity, kind of like the one I have right now, Nate Poole. I just really like those kind of high intensity coaches.”

Poole, Latin’s receivers coach, was coached by Brewer at Marshall. After his collegiate career, Poole went on to play four seasons in the NFL.

After four games, Jennings has made 11 receptions for 239 yards and four touchdowns.
