Newly Offered CB Has Local Ties

Nigel Knott, a 2016 cornerback from Madison (Miss.) Germantown who recently received a North Carolina scholarship offer, has a connection to the Tar Heel State.

The 6-foot, 170-pounder has a sister that lives in Charlotte. He most recently visited his sister last spring. During the trip, he traveled to Durham to check out Duke.

UNC offered Knott last Wednesday.

“I was sending out my highlights to the colleges,” Knott said. “Basically what I did: I sent an email with my highlights to one of the defensive coaches at North Carolina. He got back with me on Twitter and then made a phone call to my coach and then they offered me over the phone.”

Knott’s highlight film showcased his junior season, his first as a fulltime starter. On the year, he has 83 tackles, three interceptions (one for a touchdown), 15 passes deflected, a forced fumble, a blocked field goal, and blocked punt.

During his phone conversation with UNC, Knott spoke to Larry Fedora and Dan Disch, the Tar Heels’ cornerbacks coach.

“They said that they saw my film and they showed the whole coaching staff my film, and they decided that they want to offer me,” Knott said. “They asked me if I would be willing to go out of state and I said, ‘Yes, I would be.’ He asked me how I came about in finding them and I told them that I have family that stays there.”

With the UNC offer, Knott’s scholarship count has reached five. Louisville, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, and Tennessee have also offered.

“Right now, I’m open to all the schools,” Knott said. “I haven’t really even made up my mind what’s going to determine what college I want to go to yet. But I’m definitely open to going to school out of my region.”

Thus far this football season, Knott has attended a couple Mississippi State games, as well as Ole Miss’s victory over Alabama in Oxford. He’s considering attending the Alabama vs. Mississippi State game in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 15, and hopes to attend a game in Tennessee by the end of the football season.

Before receiving the UNC offer, Knott already had plans to visit his sister in Charlotte during the spring. Now, he plans on venturing to UNC while in the area.

“Mostly, I want to check out the things that the athletes go through daily [at UNC],” Knott said. “I also want to check out the facilities and meet the coaches.”
