Ala. Athlete Sets UNC Official

Keith Washington, a 6-foot-1, 161-pound athlete from Prattville (Ala.), has scheduled an official visit with North Carolina.

“I’ve been talking to Coach ‘Kap’ [Chris Kapilovic] and I know Coach [Larry] Porter, also,” Washington said. “Everything started rolling when I visited [UNC] over the summer. Now, I have an official visit scheduled for Nov. 29. They just told me that that was a good weekend for them to get me up there and see what they have going on. It was a good weekend for [my schedule], also.”

UNC hosts its regular season finale that weekend against rival NC State.

Washington has played quarterback since little league football, but UNC plans to convert him to cornerback.

“It doesn’t matter what position I play,” Washington said. “Any college I go to, I just want to hopefully get on the field my freshman year and get some playing time – hopefully I’ll start.”

Prattville, which is 9-2, heads into the second round of the AHSAA Class 7A playoffs this Friday. On the season, Washington has passed for 1,126 yards and 14 touchdowns, and rushed for 1,127 yards and 17 scores.

A few weekends back, Washington took his first official visit to California.

“It was my first time being out on the West Coast,” Washington said. “It was a great first official visit.”

Washington was scheduled to officially visit Kentucky this past weekend, but canceled because of complications with Friday’s first round playoff game. He plans to reschedule that trip.

Additionally, Washington has discussed official visit dates with LSU and Missouri.

Amid his official visit schedule, Washington doesn’t claim a leader.

“I’m not really focused on any one particular school right now,” Washington said. “I’m just kind of focused on my team and the playoffs and just letting everything fall into place [recruiting-wise].”

Over the summer while visiting Duke, the school he was committed to at the time, Washington decided to make the short trip to Chapel Hill to check out UNC.

“I only saw a little bit of the college,” Washington said. “We kind of made a quick swoop in and I was just talking to the coaches and saw the weight room and the field, and then we headed back on home.”

Washington hopes his UNC official visit later this month will be much more in-depth.

“I just want to get up there to see the campus more and experience what the atmosphere is like on game day,” Washington said. “I also want to see how the coaches and players interact with each other.”

Since that summer visit, Washington has spoken to Kapilovic at least twice a week.

“He’s always checking up on me and the team and wishing me good luck before every game,” Washington said. “I talk to him a lot.”

Washington’s relationship with Porter is much different. The two have known each other a long time – back to their days living in Texas – but they don’t speak as frequently as Washington and Kapilovic do.

“I probably haven’t talked to Coach Porter in two or three weeks,” Washington said. “But I know him very well.”

Washington moved from Texas to Alabama this past summer, while Porter made the move to N.C. shortly after Signing Day.
