Felton traveled to Chapel Hill with this family this weekend, arriving in time for Friday night’s season-opener at the Smith Center. The Feltons sat courtside to watch UNC’s win over N.C. Central and then headed to the basketball offices.
After Roy Williams finished speaking to his team postgame, he met with Felton, as well as Felton’s mother and grandparents, in his office.
“He got straight to the point -- he said he wanted to officially give me an offer,” Felton said. “Then he started relating me to my uncle. I was really listening to what he was saying and it really touched me. I’m always a Carolina fan, no matter what. That really boosted me and inched me towards committing.
“I actually thought he was going to cry, the way he poured his heart out. It touched me, my mom and grandparents. I know it meant something to them. I know they’ve been in there with my uncle before and I know they’d like for me to be there too.
“He was saying that what he tells his players is when his time is up, he doesn’t want to be a good coach or great coach, he wants to be able to say he loves his players and does everything he can to put them in the best situation in basketball and outside of basketball.”
The discussion of a commitment did come up during Friday’s late night meeting, but Felton wasn’t ready – at least not yet.
“He asked if I wanted to commit, he told me to talk it over with my parents and if I felt like I wanted to commit then I would call him back,” Felton said.
“He was really just saying, he knows I love North Carolina. It’s really my decision with what I want to do. He’ll support me through it all. Coach Roy is a great coach and I would love to be a part of it.”
The Feltons returned to campus on Saturday, attending UNC’s football game with the basketball team.
“Deep down in my heart, I know where I want to go and I know I want to go to Carolina,” Felton said.
