Heels Pushing for Blakeney Visit

HYATTSVILLE, Md. --- It’s no secret North Carolina is searching for a perimeter scorer to join its 2015 class. The Tar Heel staff continues in its attempt to get Antonio Blakeney on campus for an official visit.

On Saturday at the National High School Hoops Festival, Blakeney, who has taken four of his five allowed official visits, said that he’s undecided on taking his fifth.

“I’m not 100-percent sure, but to be honest with you it’s 50-50,” Blakeney said when asked if he would take one more visit.

Blakeney said if he takes his final visit it will be to North Carolina or NC State.

Roy Williams watched Blakeney against Orlando (Fla.) Jones earlier in the season and Hubert Davis was on hand this past weekend to watch him play, both on Saturday and Sunday.

“They’ve been trying to get me on campus January 10th and N.C. State has been trying to get me on campus January 10th,” Blakeney said. “If I do it, it’ll be one of those and that’ll be it. I really just need to talk to my mom and Coach (Steve) Reese and figure out what I’m doing.”

Blakeney is known for his ability to score – specifically, shoot -- and North Carolina has made it clear to him there’s a need for what he brings to the table.

“They are very interested,” Blakeney said. “They are basically saying they really lack shooting. I could come in and play right away and be the shooter that they need.” “I like them,” the 6-foot-4 guard out of Orlando (Fla.) Oak Ridge added. “I’ve watched them play. They let their guards play and they get guards to the league. That’s no secret. I like that situation.”

Blakeney has taken official visits to Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Missouri. Louisville is no longer under consideration. What does he like about the other three programs involved?

Missouri: “What I like about Missouri is the atmosphere and the family atmosphere and stuff like that. They need somebody to come change their program around. That’ll be somewhere I can go and really play and play through my mistakes.”

Kentucky: “He’s had 19 pros in the last five years and honestly I don’t know anybody that has went there that was supposed to be a pro and wasn’t. The only person is Ryan Harrow and he transferred. This year he may get eight guys to the league and that’s the ultimate goal for everybody so that’s what I like about them.

LSU: “It’s kind of like Missouri. They need someone to come in and change it around. They already have Ben (Simmons), who I’ve played with. Me and him could really do damage, that’s what I like about that.”

At this time, Blakeney isn’t quite sure when he’ll make his college choice.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I really don’t know. I kind of want to do it late, but my mom may want me to get it over with. I think I’m going to talk to her after City of Palms (which begins later this week) and figure it out.”
