"I'd just like to say I'm taking my talents to the University of North Carolina," Hughes said, as he joined his entire family in putting on a UNC hat and revealing the Tar Heel clothing that they all had hidden underneath their sweaters.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound athlete selected UNC over co-finalists Florida and NC State. He took in-season official visits to all three programs.
Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Mississippi, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech also offered Hughes.
Earlier in the month, Hughes quarterbacked New Bern to an undefeated record and the NCHSAA 4A State Championship. On the season, he passed for 1,263 yards and ten touchdowns, and rushed for 1,355 yards and 22 touchdowns.
A day after winning the title, Hughes drove to Spartanburg to begin practicing for the Shrine Bowl. On Saturday, he started at cornerback for the N.C. squad.
UNC projects Hughes to play cornerback, but figures to utilize him on offense as well.
Dan Disch was the lead recruiter for Hughes.
Hughes is UNC’s six in-state verbal commitment – 17th overall.
