Enrollees Talk Defense

Three days before the 10 Tar Heel recruits began enrolling to begin their college careers, news broke that UNC was hiring a new defensive coordinator - Gene Chizik. Inside Carolina asked the enrollees their thoughts on a new coordinator and a new defensive scheme.

J.K. Britt: “I’m happy, because at my school I played corner [and] I played safety, and in an all-star game I played the Star position/the nickel position. So I’m ready. Just stick me in any position, I’ll be ready to play.”

Jalen Dalton: “I haven’t talked to any of the coaches about [the new defensive coordinator] – I’ve only talked to the fans [about it], really. I heard about [Gene] Chizik [being hired] on ESPN.

“As long as it’s a four-[man] front, it’s mostly the same for me. I just have to get off the edge as a pass rusher.”

Andre Smith: “I talked to Coach [Dan] Disch and Coach [Larry] Fedora and they told me Gene Chizik was the guy. Fedora, he said he just likes the move and he’s excited. I tried to get in contact with Gene Chizik, but I couldn’t get his number.

“I actually prefer that better [than a 4-2-5]. I feel like the 4-3 is just a better defense and I played in it my first two years of high school and I excelled playing the Sam [strong-side linebacker].”
