Roy Williams Offers Simmons

Roy Williams and Hubert Davis were at Alpharetta (Ga.) St. Francis on Tuesday to watch Kobi Simmons. By the end of the evening, the 2016 guard had a Tar Heel scholarship offer.

“[Hubert] called me three days ago and said he was looking forward to seeing me again,” Simmons said. “He talked to me about their program. We had a long conversation. I was in the middle of school and he texted my coach and said ‘Me and Roy are coming tonight.’”

The UNC staff has been a regular at Simmons's games this winter. In fact, Tuesday was Wiliams's third viewing of Simmons in as many weeks.

“Roy Williams called me when he left the gym," Simmons said shortly after receiving the call. "He had said he was going to wait and then he called me right away and offered me a scholarship.”

Simmons, who stands 6-5, is ranked No. 8 overall in the 2016 class and his Scout.com evaluation reads "a fantastically quick and explosive scorer ... with athleticism in the open court and additional skill for the halfcourt, he's an easy call for elite status."

He said North Carolina began picking up its interest in him prior to the start of his junior season. Among the things that stand out to him about the Tar Heels is their style of play.

“I like them,” Simmons said. “It’s a great school.”

“I like how they play and how Coach Roy coaches,” he added. “Just the energy. They have a lot of energy and they are good teammates and seem like a family. It seems like a good fit and we’ll see how it all goes down the road.”

Simmons hasn’t taken a visit to North Carolina yet, but Williams talked to him about getting him to campus soon.

“Coach Roy just talked to me about that,” Simmons said. “He said he’s going to call me later in the week.”

Simmons also holds scholarship offers from Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Louisville, Missouri, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas, Wake Forest and a host of others.
