DeLaurier 'Ecstatic' About UNC Offer

Javin DeLaurier didn't see it coming. The 6-9 forward from Charlottesville (Va.) St. Anne's-Belfield School discussed his Sunday visit to UNC and the surprise scholarship offer he received from Roy Williams.

I hear you took a visit to North Carolina on Sunday, how did that come about?
Yes, sir. We went down there to meet Roy Williams. We talked on the phone a couple of times and he wanted to get us on campus. It was a nice little drive and a great visit.

What stood out most about the trip?
Just the North Carolina tradition. We walked to that museum and just the names that went to that school like Jordan and Worthy, it’s crazy.

How attractive is the tradition to you?
It’s definitely an attractive piece of the school, knowing the legacy of the players. It’s definitely appealing.

What all did you do while you were on campus?
It was a short trip. We got there about 5:30 and we had to get back. We were there for about three hours. We left about 8:30 to get back before midnight. We walked through their museum and toured the basketball offices. Saw the Dean Dome and then talked to Coach. Then we talked for a while about academics.

Do you know what you want to major in yet?
Right now I’m leaning towards going into pre-med through bio.

How has UNC’s recruitment been of you to date?
It’s been kind of sudden. It really picked up last week. I talked to coach McGrath previously, then I started talking to coach Roy Williams last week a couple of times.

Do you know what led to the interest?
Just the spring performance. That’s it.

How was your conversation with Roy Williams?
It was great. We have a lot of similarities. Both of us are from rural towns. We got to talk a little about his grandchildren, growing up and I just told him a little about Nelson County.

What did he say about the scholarship offer?
We talked for about an hour and a half. Then at the end he offered me a scholarship. I was ecstatic.

Did you know an offer was coming?
No, because of how sudden it was. Just going down there I was hoping to meet with him. Just going on campus, it turned out to be amazing.

What’s your take on UNC now that they’ve offered?
It’s another great option. It’s hard because UNC like we talked about has great tradition. It has some qualities that are unique.

Outside of the tradition, what else do you like about UNC?
The coaching staff is great. It’s ACC basketball. It just has a lot of character.

Where does your recruitment stand right now?
Right now I’m just feeling really blessed by the all the attention. I’m just sort of going through the rest of the summer with an open mind and seeing what will happen and what options develop.

What schools are making you a priority right now?
A lot of schools are in the mix. Some schools that haven’t offered have started recruiting me harder the past three weeks like Cal, Stanford, and previously UNC. It’s pretty open.

Texas, Baylor, Virginia Tech, Princeton, Xavier, Cincinnati, Wake Forest, Boston College, Miami, Clemson, UNC, Vanderbilt, Marquette, they’ve all offered. Notre Dame and Georgetown.

Have you taken any other visits recently?
That was the only visit I’ve taken in a while.

What other schools have you taken unofficials to?
I’ve visited the in-state schools - the Virginia schools - and Princeton.
