CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --- The North Carolina coaching staff has been keeping tabs on Dewan Huell for more than a year. That interest, earlier this week, turned into a scholarship offer.
Roy Williams called the 6-10, 215-pound forward and offered him a scholarship on Monday.
“Coach Williams basically told me how he wants me on campus and tried to get me up there on a visit,” Huell said.
The plan, Huell said, is to visit “later on.”
Assistant coach Hubert Davis has been the point man on Huell’s recruitment, making multiple trips to Norland (Fla.) Miami. Davis and Williams watched Huell play with Team Breakdown during the Under Armour Association's second session in Louisville in April.
“Coach Hubert has been texting me pretty much every day,” Huell said.
Huell said Florida State, Florida, South Carolina, Miami and North Carolina among the schools recruiting him the hardest. He cited his defensive ability and high motor as the reasons he’s garnering national interest.
“I’m always going to rebound and play hard no matter what,” he said.
Huell is the 13th player in the class of 2016 to receive a UNC scholarship offer. He’s the fourth frontcourt player to receive an offer from Williams since Sunday.
Following the July live period, Huell hopes to narrow down his list and take all five official visits.

"He’s very quick off the floor and utilizes his springs for numerous interior finishers, and he also elevates explosively for boards and blocks. Meanwhile, he sits down in the post and unleashes a smooth and quick jump hook with range to eight feet. That’s a weapon that will serve him very well in the future as well as the present. Huell’s energy also impresses and the fact that he’s naturally a finesse player but one who understands the traditional role of a 6-9 big man."
