UNC One of Clement's Favorites

The North Carolina defensive staff closely tracked Jacobe Clement at UNC's camp and will now do the same on the recruiting trail.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- After losing in the first round of North Carolina’s “Beast of the Hill” 7-on-7 Team Camp last month, South Mecklenburg immediately headed back to Charlotte. Jacobe Clement, a 2017 cornerback, wasn’t home long when his coach, Rocky White, called and told him to contact Charlton Warren, UNC’s defensive backs coach.

“We talked about a few things and that’s when he told me he wanted to offer me,” Clement said. “He said he liked what he’d seen at the 7-on-7, I’m definitely his type of kid, and he would love to work with me on the next level.”

UNC is the latest of Clement’s seven offers. The 6-foot, 171-pounder also holds offers from Charlotte, Clemson, Miami (Ohio), NC State, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.

Throughout South Mecklenburg’s participation in the “Beast of the Hill,” Clement couldn’t help but notice that he was being followed. Regardless of the opponent as South Meck moved from field to field, he glanced to the sidelines between plays to see either or both Gene Chizik and Charlton Warren watching the action vigilantly.

“I appreciated it more than anything,” Clement said. “It made me feel like they cared and they were interested.”

Eventually, observation turned into conversation between Clement and Chizik/Warren when South Meck was on offense.

“They told me what I did wrong, what I need to work on, and what I did well,” Clement said. “And they said they liked what they’d seen.”

Two days later, Clement returned to UNC for Fedora’s Freak Show.

“At the 7-on-7, you’re with your team,” Clement said. “I felt a little more comfortable with my team and playing together. And then at the Freak Show – on top of me being sick – I was just out there all alone.

“The atmosphere, though, was nice and made you feel at home. What other camp would you really play dodge ball? I just felt like a kid, but I didn’t do well in dodge ball – it’s not my sport.”

During the Freak Show’s “Who’s Next?” conclusion, UNC added commitments from two 2016 prospects (Luke Elder and Tomon Fox). The Tar Heels nearly added two from the 2017 class.

“With the adrenaline, I wanted to [stand up and commit],” Clement said. “But, Jake [Lawler] and I just looked at each other and said, ‘Not yet, not yet.’”

On that note, Clement says he and Lawler continue to explore a package deal.

Unsurprisingly, Clement lists UNC among his favorite schools. Clemson and Wake Forest are the other schools that he’s favoring.

Outside of UNC, Clement has camped at Clemson and Duke this summer. He plans to camp at Tennessee later this July.
