ICTV: Scouting Lauri Markkanen
Roy Williams is a frequent traveler on the recruiting trail, with many drives and flights throughout the year. But his pursuit of Lauri Markkanen is going to require him to travel farther than usual.
Markkanen is a 6-10 power forward that plays for Helsinki Basketball Academy in Finland, and plans to play college hoops starting in 2016-17 in the United States at North Carolina, Utah or Arizona.
Williams plans to travel to Helsinki in September to conduct an in-home visit, during which he'll be able to catch up with one of his former players - Lauri's father, Pekka, who played for Williams at Kansas (1989-90).
Markkanen will take official visits to his three finalists in October, but in the meantime has continued to face quality international competition. Following his league play earlier this year, he attended the Basketball Without Borders camp in New York City, and is now competing for the Finland national team at the U18 European Championship in Greece.
Jonathan Givony of Draft Express has scouted Markkanen at multiple events and he spoke with Inside Carolina's Sherrell McMillan on Markkanen's ability.
"If he was here in high school he would be recruited at a McDonald's All-American level," Givony said.
Givony spoke highly of Markanen but thinks he'll need to add weight in order to thrive with American-style play.
"I think he's going to have to fill into his body, he's grown in the last year, is my understanding. And I think he's still developing from a physical standpoint."
Listen to everything Givony had to say about Markanen and watch new footage of the UNC overseas target in action earlier this year in the above video.
