Starting center Lucas Crowley (knee) and backup guard Will Dancy suffered injuries during UNC’s first scrimmage on Sunday, according to a team source.
Crowley is expected back in time for the season opener against South Carolina on Sept. 3. Dancy’s injury will sideline him for an extended period of time.
The injuries further exacerbate depth issues on the interior after sophomore guard Jared Cohen left the team for personal reasons before camp started. His return is uncertain.
“There is no timeframe right now,” offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic said on Monday. “We’ve got to prepare now like he’s not here and go from there.”
Kapilovic initially intended to use sophomore Brad Henson in a swing guard/center role, but the current absences of Cohen and Dancy has forced him into a primary role at guard in the two deep. Backup right tackle John Ferranto also took snaps guard this week.
True freshman Tommy Hatton has moved into Crowley’s spot with the first team at center.
