Five-star linebacker Keion Joyner made his second – and very likely his final – recruiting visit of the summer on Friday. Both trips’ destinations were to the same in-state school: North Carolina.
“[Friday’s visit] made my feelings a lot stronger [towards UNC],” Joyner said.
Regardless, Joyner isn’t touching his favorite schools list – at least publicly. Florida State, LSU, and UNC comprise said list. And the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Havelock (N.C.) product’s undisclosed leader will remain confidential.
“With those schools, it’s just the chemistry I have with the coaches and being able to see different types of schemes,” Joyner said.
The focal point of Friday’s visit was to spend time with Gene Chizik. Much of which was accomplished during a more than 30 minute meeting with UNC’s defensive coordinator.
“It went very well,” Joyner said. “I learned about a lot of different aspects of the defense. I learned about positioning and steps.”
Chizik’s primary instructional tool was UNC practice film from his seven-plus months on staff.
“He’s a great teacher and a go-getter,” Joyner said.
To a small degree, Joyner saw an example of Chizik’s teachings during that day’s walkthrough practice.
“I liked it,” Joyner said. “It was similar to the Havelock Rams.”
Before returning to Havelock, Joyner and his assistant coach, Matt Handley, met with Larry Fedora.
“He talked about getting me to come back for games,” Joyner said. “And he talked about adding freaks of nature to the team – such as myself. He wants animals on the field.”
Joyner said he definitely plans to return to UNC for a game this season, but he’s unsure which one. He also intends to use an official visit on the Tar Heels.
Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, and Oregon are the four other programs that will receive an official visit from Joyner. He doesn’t have any future visits, official or unofficial, planned at the moment. His focus is Havelock’s season-opener against Washington (N.C.) on Friday.
