ICTV: Defense Encouraged, Not Satisfied

North Carolina's defense showed the benefits of having a new scheme and new coaches during Thursday night's game.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- After much anticipation, UNC's revamped defense proved to be improved and effective during the matchup against South Carolina, allowing only 17 points. Senior linebacker Jeff Schoettmer said it's just the first step.

"I was encouraged with what we did defensively, but like I said, we're not satisfied with anything," Schoettmer said. "We showed improvements and it was fun for guys to go out there and really show we can be a good defense."

Head coach Larry Fedora was also pleased with some aspects of the defense and saw areas of improvement needed in others.

"They did some really good things," Fedora said. "I'm not going to come in here and say that the defensive staff was all fired up about what happened in the game because they weren't. The way they looked at it, they gave up a catastrophic play that was the difference in the game.

"But there were a lot of bright spots defensively for them to build off of."
