For the first time in his UNC tenure, Roy Williams's recruiting travel itinerary this fall will include Europe.
The Tar Heel head coach is scheduled to meet with Lauri Markkanen at the Helsinki Basketball Academy in Finland on Sept. 28, according to HBA coach Hanno Möttölä.
Markkanen, a 6-10 forward, is considered one of the top international prospects in his age group, according to multiple scouts. Playing with Finland’s national team at the U18 European Championships this summer, he averaged 18.2 points and 6.3 rebounds, shooting 54 percent from the field and 41 percent on three-point attempts.
Markkanen will also be meeting this month with coaches from Arizona and Utah, which comprise the rest of his three finalists. He plans to travel to the United States in October to make official visits to all three schools, with the Chapel Hill visit slated for Oct. 13-14.
Roy Williams has a unique tie in to Markkanen's father, Pekka, who played for Williams at Kansas during the 1989-1990 season.
