UNC Defense Adopting Relentless, Aggressive Approach

The UNC defense's 2015 mindset was exemplified by the secondary against Illinois.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC's defense has already made significant strides through three games in 2015 under Gene Chizik, yet the first-year Tar Heel defensive coordinator continues to push them to work - and play - harder.

"You play how you practice," said junior cornerback Des Lawrence. "Coach Chizik comes in and on Tuesday we all know it's a business day, it almost feels like training camp practices, which are really hot, long, tiring practices. But he always tells us to strain your body and at the end of the day you're still fine. You're still able to breathe; still able to walk."

Lawrence said one of the secondary's main focuses is to avoid giving up big plays.

"Our main focus in the game is we really don't want to give up big plays," Lawrence said. "Iif the ball is thrown into the air we want it to be ours.

"The defense set a tone for ourselves that we're a bend but don’t break team."

Head Coach Larry Fedora said the defense has also adopted Chizik's physical mindset.

"A much more aggressive approach," Fedora said. "We'll go up and press you and know that they have the ability to do it. And so they've got a lot of confidence right now."
