Heels Set to Host Lauri Markkanen

North Carolina will host Finland standout Lauri Markkanen for an official visit this week.

Lauri Markkanen arrives in Chapel Hill on Tuesday for a two-day official visit.

The 6-10 senior, who stars at the Helsinki Basketball Academy in Finland, is coming straight from an official visit to Utah. After UNC, Markkanen will head back across the country to his other finalist - Arizona.

He's accompanied by his father, Pekka, who played a season for Roy Williams at Kansas. Williams visited Helsinki on Sept 28 for an "in-home" visit with Markkanen and his mother.

Markkanen is considered one of the top international prospects in his age group. He earned high marks from scouts while averaging 18.2 points and 6.3 rebounds for Finland’s U18 team in the FIBA U18 European Championships this summer.

While Scout.com doesn’t rank prospects that reside overseas, Markkanen is equivalent to a five-star, Top 25 prospect. At his size, he’s mobile, has great hands and touch, and stretches the floor with his jump shot.

Markkanen appears to represent UNC's best remaining chance at adding another high level post player to its 2016 class for the Fall Signing Period. As a skilled face-up power forward, Markkanen would be an ideal complement to center Tony Bradley , who committed to UNC last month.

This is the fourth class of 2016 prospect that UNC has hosted for an official visit. Of the other three, Bradley and Brandon Robinson have since committed to UNC while Seventh Woods is expected to make his decision soon.
