CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina’s 2015-16 basketball team sits atop the Preseason AP Poll for the first time since 2011-12 and for the ninth time in program history, the most by any school.
"I do feel like we're going to be a good basketball team,” head coach Roy Williams said in a statement. “I'm excited for our kids, because this is one of the best groups that I've ever worked with. We made a nice run last year but were disappointed with the way it ended. Hopefully we will use that as fuel to be the best team we can be this year."
The Tar Heels received 35 of 65 first place votes, while Kentucky, Maryland, Kansas, Duke completed the top five.
"There are so many good teams, I don't see how anybody could pick just one to be No. 1 at this point of the season," Williams added. "But it's certainly nice to be one of those teams under consideration.”UNC is 185-30 all-time as the No. 1 team in the AP poll and 47-6 during the Roy Williams era.
The Tar Heels have been ranked in the AP poll in 109 different weeks, which is fourth-best in the poll’s history behind UCLA (134), Duke (127) and Kentucky (120).
UNC also shares the No. 1 spot in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll with Kentucky. It’s the fourth time the Tar Heels have started a season ranked No. 1 in the coaches’ poll since it began in 1994-95.
