Target 2004: James Thompson

A gifted offensive lineman from Sumter, S.C., 6-foot-5, 310-pound James Thompson ran an impressive 4.91 seconds in the 40-yard dash at North Carolina's summer camp. He bench presses 405 pounds.

Thompson enjoyed his visit to Chapel Hill and plans to come back to a football game for an official visit. His current top five include South Carolina (offer), Maryland (offer), North Carolina (offer), Virginia, and Georgia. He also has offers from Clemson, East Carolina, and South Carolina State.

"I wanted to visit Chapel Hill and get a chance to meet the North Carolina coaching staff," Thompson said. "Coach [Brad] Lawing is my recruiting coordinator from North Carolina. My top five teams are all even right now. I plan to wait until signing day to make my decision."

Thompson said that while he doesn't have a favorite his parents would probably prefer that he choose South Carolina, who also as James' favorite school growing up.

"I am not sure how much my parent's preference (to go to South Carolina) will affect my decision," Thompson said. "We'll have to wait and see. I'm sure that they would accept whatever decision I would ultimately make."

Sumter head coach Paul Sorrells, is high on his prep prodigy.

"He has all the ability in the world," Sorrells said. "He is big, strong and fast. I don't think he even begins to know how good he could be. On top of that, he is a fine young man who is very polite. He's a class act all the way around."
