WR Rontavius Groves Commits to UNC

Tennessee wide receiver gave his pledge minutes before the ACC Championship Game.

Minutes before North Carolina kicked off in the ACC Championship Game, it received a commitment.

Rontavius Groves has joined UNC's class of 2016.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound wide receiver from Nashville (Tenn.) Pearl-Cohn chose the Tar Heels over Illinois, Vanderbilt, and West Virginia.

Why did you decide to commit to UNC?

“Me and the coaches have a great relationship. They have a great relationship with my family and friends. And I talk to them on a consistent basis.

“It’s not a crazy far distance from home. And it’s a great opportunity to get on the field early – even as a freshman. And I feel I can get a great education at that school.”

Speaking of relationships, you’ve mentioned previously that you and Gunter Brewer speak almost daily. How did that relationship impact this decision?

“It had a huge impact. Being able to have a relationship with your position coach, that’s huge – you always want that. Coach Brewer is like family now. We talk about things that you literally talk with family about.”

You originally planned to wait until after taking your official visits in January before committing. Why the change?

“All my officials were going to be so late in the recruiting process, I didn’t want to miss any opportunities. I just felt like North Carolina was the best place for me – I didn’t want to lose that opportunity.”

When did you inform the coaches?

“I informed the coaches Monday of this week. It was a silent commit, but I just put it out the past five minutes.”

Why did you decide to keep it silent for nearly a week?

“I wanted to win the state championship and then announce it on television. But we lost, so it didn’t work out.”

Making it to the state championship is a big accomplishment, though. How do you feel about your senior season?

“I’m just glad to be a part of this team. I love all the experiences that we’ve had. I just hope the underclassmen step to fill our position. Everybody on the team – the players and the coaches – have a great relationship.”

Who did you call and what their reaction?

“I called Coach Brewer and then I talked to the head coach [Larry Fedora]. They showed a bunch of love. They were very excited.”

You’re scheduled to officially visit UNC the weekend of the Jan. 16. Do you have any other official visits scheduled?

“I have Vandy on the 22nd and Illinois on the 29th.”

Are you still going to take all your official visits?

“Honestly, I’m not sure at this time.”

How does UNC plan to use you within the offense?

“They told me exactly how they use Ryan Switzer – move me around in the slot to get me the ball.”
