UNC Recruit Kevin Knox Shines at City of Palms

The top 10 2017 prospect recently landed offers from UNC and Duke.

FORT MYERS, Fla. --- Five-star forward Kevin Knox’s versatility was on full display during the opening round of the City of Palms Classic on Friday.

An athletic 6-foot-8 forward, Knox, who already ranks as Scout’s No. 10 overall recruit, showed an improvement to his ball skills and put effort into attacking the glass. Perhaps one of his biggest strengths is his ability to take those boards and start the break.

“Everybody knows when I get the rebound to just take off and run and I’ll find you in the fast break,” Knox said after the game. “I can score on the fast break and I have good vision and I can pass to my teammates.”

But it wasn’t just his rebounding and skillset that impressed, Knox scored the ball in a variety of ways for Tampa (Fla.) Catholic in its win over Punta Gorda (Fla.) Charlotte. Knox made a three-pointer, connected from mid-range and finished off a number of plays in transition and in the paint.

“In the fall, I worked out a lot and I worked hard with just my ball handling and my shooting and just being more aggressive on the offensive end and I think that showed tonight,” he said.

In all, Knox, who was watched Friday by North Carolina assistant Steve Robinson, recorded 27 points on 11-for-22 shooting and 12 rebounds.

How’s the recruiting process going?
It’s going really well. I had two big offers this past week. A lot of schools are starting to pick up their interest and I’m getting a lot of phone calls.

North Carolina offered recently, what were your thoughts on that?
Coach Roy, he loves me. He really wants me. They want me to play the wing too. They like to run and that’s what I like to do and they are a really good program too.

How important is it to you to have those type of conversations with head coaches?
It’s really important, that showed that they really care and they want me and making me a priority.

What’s your take on the Tar Heels?
It’s a really good school. I have family up there so I’ll probably go to take a visit up there soon too.

Duke was the latest to offer, what’d you think about it and them?
That was big. It helped a lot. I earned that one. Coach told me that I worked really hard for that and he wanted to go ahead and offer me.

They’re a really good school with a Final Four and national championship and I’m probably going to take a visit up there soon during the season.

What’s their pitch?
Coach K told me every time I watch them play to watch Brandon Ingram because that’s what they want me to do when I get up there, show versatility and play any position they want. Play the two and three.

What’s your plan on taking visits?
I don’t have really any set right now but those are the two I’ll take visits too.

Your dad played at Florida State, how does that impact your recruitment?

Not really. He knows I don’t have to go there, but of course they are pretty high on my list. But that has nothing to do with me.

Do you think you’ll have time during the season to take visits?
Yes sir. Me and my coach will sit down and talk about some good times and weekends to take off and go visit colleges.

Are there any other schools involved that may be close to offering?
I talked to South Carolina head coach and Coach Calipari has called me a couple of times and my dad has talked to them a lot. I feel an offer coming soon.
