Despite dealing with a coaching change this past offseason, Wilmington (N.C.) New Hanover posted a 12-3 record and reached the NCHSAA 4A Regional Final. Much of that success is attributed to the play of the placid Garrett Walston.
Walston paired strong, reliable hands with body control to make several receptions that were later showcased during the local 11 o’clock news. Although he’s not a homerun threat, he’s a strong runner who will pick up additional yards after the catch.
In total, the 6-foot-4, 213-pound tight end pulled in 61 catches for 933 yards and nine touchdowns. He added two more scores on rushes.
What won’t appear within his statistics – or the 11 o’clock news – is Walston’s blocking ability. He’s not simply an oversized receiver – he’s a willing blocker who will square up his target and take them out of the play.
