S Javontay Smith No Longer Committed to UNC

UNC drops its longest tenured verbal commitment.

Javontay Smith was told by the North Carolina coaching staff on Sunday that he needed to look elsewhere because of his academic situation, sources informed Inside Carolina. He's NCAA qualified, but won't clear UNC admissions. Thus, Smith is no longer a part of UNC's 2016 commitment list.

Smith, a 6-foot, 185-pound safety from Columbus (Ga.) Carver, became UNC's first 2015 verbal commitment way back in November '14.

This subtraction comes on the heels of UNC offering D.J. Ford. Ford, also a safety (albeit with good academic standing) who officially visited this past week, committed immediately. UNC's 2016 class now stands at 24 members.
