Cori Powell commits to UNC

Inside Carolina learned that North Carolina has picked up commitment No. 6 for the class of 2004. Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day linebacker Cori Powell has decided to become a Tar Heel.

Cori Powell has committed to North Carolina.

Providence Day Coach Keith Flynn confirmed this for Inside Carolina Wednesday morning.

"Cori was offered about two weeks ago by North Carolina," Flynn said. "He went to their one-day camp. He was also offered by Maryland. Other schools recruiting Powell included Clemson, Duke, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest."

Powell stands 6-2, weighs 225 and has been clocked at 4.50 in the 40-yard dash.

"He's got a big motor," Flynn added. "He is just relentless on every play. He would be on the quarterback all the time. I think North Carolina is recruiting him both as a LB and a FB. He is an excellent blocker as a fullback."

Powell earned honors by being selected All-State and All-Conference. He was the leading tackler (approximately 100) and lead the team in sacks.

He is ranked No. 17 in the state in Miller Safrit's N.C. Top 30 rankings.
