Despite missing three games, North Carolina pledge Rontavius Groves led Nashville (Tenn.) Pearl-Cohn in receiving and finished second in total touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound wide receiver was an all-purpose producer – scoring by consistently pulling in deep balls, creating separation with his route running, and turning runs or short passes into scores.
As Pearl-Cohn reached the TSSAA 4A Championship, Groves caught 59 passes for 1,067 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Defenders respected Groves as a deep threat with sizable cushions, but he would quickly eat up the space and then put himself in the best position to make the grab. He used his outstanding lateral agility to get open and/or end a play in the end zone.
