UNC Football Class of 2016 Signee: DE Allen Cater

Inside Carolina takes a closer look at the Tar Heel signee.

BIO: Received all-state, all-region, all-metro, and All-Cobb County honors following his senior season. • Posted 48 tackles and two sacks as a junior to help lead Mt. Paran to Cobb County first state championship in 47 years as the team went 14-0 • Earned second-team all-region honors as a junior • Played in the Georgia Junior-Sophomore Elite Classic • High school head coach was Mitch Jordan • Also plays on the basketball team and has lettered in track running the 400, 200, 4×100, 4×400, and competing in the long jump

RECRUITMENT: In late June, Cater committed to Indiana. After officially visiting Arkansas and Indiana on consecutive December weekends, he de-committed from the Hoosiers and eliminated them from contention. During the Winter Dead Period, he scheduled official visits to UNC and South Carolina. However, he canceled the trip to Columbia shortly after returning from Chapel Hill. On Signing Day, he selected the Tar Heels over Arkansas.

WHY CAROLINA: “With that (official visit) being my first time seeing North Carolina, the guys really impressed me. They pretty much just let me see what it was like to be a Tar Heel for 48 hours and once I was able to be on campus, to be with the team, to be with the guys that are already committed, their parents, the coaches and to see how they go about things I said, ‘That’s what I want to do.’"

EVALUATION: Cater is a balanced defensive end who utilizes his athleticism and strong, active hands to penetrate the backfield. He consistently fires out of his stance low and has displayed on occasion an explosive initial step. He has flashed an assortment of moves, but mostly relies on swims and rips. He’s a strong tackler who will pursue the play down the field.
