Wendell Moore on UNC Offer: 'It's An Honor'

Freshman phenom Wendell Moore, from Concord (N.C.) Cox Mill, discusses receiving a UNC scholarship offer from Roy Williams on Saturday.

Q&A with Wendell Moore

How did the scholarship offer happen today?

I watched the game and UNC played really well against Miami. They looked good. After the game (Roy Williams) just took me back in his office and said, 'Do you know you're the second?' I wasn't sure what he meant and then he said, ‘You're the second freshman I've ever offered a scholarship to.’

I was like, 'Oh man,' I couldn't believe it. It's just an honor to know that out of all the great players he's coached, I have a chance to be one of those.

What are your thoughts on UNC?

I like North Carolina, it's definitely a family type program. Everyone knows each other and I can tell when I come.

How well do you know UNC commitment and fellow Concord native Rechon Black?

We’ve been friends and we used to play against each other back in the day.

Has he started trying to recruit you already?

He texts me ‘Go Heels’ and ‘Carolina is the place to go.’ Everytime we see each other he’s talking about ‘Tar Heels, Tar Heels,’ so yeah he’s working me.

For people that haven’t seen you play before, tell me about Wendell Moore on the court?

Me on the court is anything that you need me to do. Need me to score? I can score. Need me to defend? I can defend. I’m just one of the guys that wants to help the team win and do what I can.

Did Roy Williams talk about the significance of getting an offer?

He just said that when they throw out an offer, then you become a part of their family.

Does Williams plan to watch you play again soon?

He said that he has two more (NCAA allotted evaluation) visits with me and doesn’t know if he’ll use them for high school or the spring (AAU) season.

So what offers do you have now?

Carolina - today, NC State, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Georgia, and UNC Charlotte.

How are you handling getting so much recruiting attention this early?

The thing for me is that at the end I know it’ll be my decision and there’s no pressure on me to do what’s best for me, so right now I’m just focused on playing my game and being the best I can be.
