As first reported by Inside Carolina on Saturday, defensive tackle Donti Coats has received a medical hardship and will no longer play football. A rising senior from Chesapeake, Va., Coats has suffered from injuries to his right ankle in each of the last three seasons.
"I'm disappointed Donti will no longer be able to play football," said head coach John Bunting. "He's battled an ankle injury for several years and after discussing the situation with Donti and our medical staff, all parties felt it was best for Donti to stop playing football. Donti is on track to graduate in December and I hope he will remain active in our program despite not being able to be on the field."
In 2002, Coats played in 11 games and started three at defensive tackle. He finished the season with 25 tackles, including 13 solo stops and 12 assists.
