HAMPTON, Va. --- P.J. Washington couldn't have delivered a better weekend at the latest EYBL event. The 2017 forward averaged 19.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, shot 69 percent from the floor and led Team Penny to a 4-0 record.
Washington's savvy, skills and high motor were on full display, and those are a few of the traits that have made him one of UNC's top targets in the rising senior class. He talked with Inside Carolina about his Tar Heel recruitment.
Who is P.J. Washington on the court?
I’m a hustle player. I do whatever the coach wants me to do to win. I just have a lot of heart and I hate losing.
How much work have you put into your advanced skills like finishing with both hands?
A lot. You have to work on the fundamentals all the time, because if you don’t you lose it.
As far as your recruitment goes, North Carolina has been talking to you…
Yeah, I talk to (assistant) Coach (Steve) Robinson and Coach (Roy) Williams a lot.
What are those conversations like?
Just talking about getting me to campus and going around and seeing everything.
Have they mentioned to you how you would fit into the UNC system?
They said I would be like a '3' man on the wing, and just playing the mismatches like Brice Johnson down low.
Did you watch a lot of Brice Johnson and North Carolina this year?
Yeah. I like his (Brice Johnson's) energy and stuff. His offensive rebounding was killing everybody and he can jump out the gym.
You mentioned a UNC visit, are you thinking about taking an unofficial or an official?
I want to take an unofficial and an official.
Have dates been discussed?
Overall, what’s North Carolina’s message to you?
They want me a lot. They text me every day and really right now they just want me to come see the campus.
What do you know about North Carolina’s program?
I’ve always liked them since I was little, watching them. They’ve always been good to me. I liked it when Tyler Hansbrough used to kill it back in the day with Ty Lawson, that was something for me to look up to.
