Va. O-lineman Tyran Hunt Working on UNC Visit

Tyran Hunt likes how UNC combines athletics with academics.

With a North Carolina scholarship offer in hand, Tyran Hunt is attempting to visit Chapel Hill.

“A lot of things are going on and a lot of things are changing within my school and here at my home,” Hunt said. “So, I’m working on it with the [UNC] coaching staff and amongst my family on what would be a perfect date.

“I would love for it to be very soon. But, worst case scenario, it will be a summer time visit. I wouldn't mind doing a camp so that I can get a work out in and also see the campus.”

Chris Kapilovic, UNC’s offensive line coach, first made contact with Hunt in early May. A week later, the 6-foot-7, 280-pound offensive tackle from Courtland (Va.) Southampton was offered.

“I guess [Kapilovic] had to get confirmation before offering,” Hunt said. “He talked to my head coach and he got my transcripts. They really liked what they saw, so I believe it was a Friday when Coach [Kapilovic] came up to the school and he offered me a scholarship.”

A baker’s dozen of schools have offered Hunt. Highlighting that group are Duke, UNC, NC State, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.

Thus far, Hunt’s recruiting travels have been within a four-hour radius to ACC schools. He has visited NC State, Wake Forest, and both in-state programs.

In addition to UNC, Hunt is working towards visiting Duke. He could wisely pair the two Tobacco Road Rivals within one swing.

In preparation for his visit, Hunt has begun to research UNC.

“I’ve been looking up information to understand [UNC’s football] program,” Hunt said. “Behind the program is a lot great information about how the school is academically inclined. And they have a very good [football] program, as well. I love the fact that they can combine both, because the degree carries you a long way. They make it a big thing with not just playing football, but being a student-athlete.”

With two pivotal trips remaining on his docket, Hunt isn’t ready to name favorite schools.

“I’m still kind of finding who’s sticking out and who’s not,” Hunt said. “I’m still doing my evaluations on how a school checks out… Once I do the majority of my visits, that’s when I can say ‘Oh, I like this college better than this college.’”

According to Hunt, Kapilovic is recruiting Hunt as an offensive tackle. Since his sophomore year, Hunt has started both ways for Southampton – tackle on offense and up and down the line on defense.
