UNC Offers, Sets Visit with Nick Weatherspoon

The Miss. guard will check out Chapel Hill next month.

North Carolina is ramping up their interest in 2017 guard Nick Weatherspoon.

After watching him in April, the Tar Heels have since offered him a scholarship and now will bring him on campus.

“They’ve been recruiting me hard,” said Weatherspoon, a 6-2 rising senior from Camden (Miss.) Velma Jackson.

“It’s going real good,” he added about UNC’s recruitment. “I talked to Roy [Williams] and Coach Hubert (Davis). I’m real close with Coach Hubert. He calls me on Wednesdays to check on me and my family.”

Weatherspoon said that his relationship with Roy Williams is getting stronger.

“It’s going real good,” he said. “He told me he had to have (knee replacement) surgery then I called him and checked on him. Our relationship is growing.”

Following the second April evaluation period, Weatherspoon received a call from Davis saying he had an offer from North Carolina. Since that conversation, Roy Williams has solidified the offer.

“I talked to him about it,” Weatherspoon said of the offer from UNC’s head coach. “He said he doesn’t usually do it over the phone, but that he couldn’t help but do it and then he told me over the phone that I had a scholarship offer.”

“It was real big,” he added. “I didn’t really think these big coaches would be calling my phone like this. They just played in the National Championship. It was big.”

Weatherspoon also set an unofficial visit to North Carolina for June 12, just prior to participating in the NBPA Top 100 Camp. Although not set in stone, Weatherspoon said he may visit NC State as well.

Following the camp, Weatherspoon will go to Ohio State for visit.

With his strong play in the adidas Gauntlet with MBA Hoops, Weatherspoon has added interest and offers from a host of schools. That attention is moving up the timetable to make his college choice.

“I feel like it’s moved up because I’m getting the offers that I want,” he said. “I can probably make the decision by the end of the summer.”

Weatherspoon is averaging 23.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists in the 2016 adidas Gauntlet series.
