Nick Weatherspoon, UNC Coach Roy Williams Talking Frequently

Explosive guard aims to visit UNC soon.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Nick Weatherspoon always knows when to expect a call from North Carolina’s head coach.

“Roy Williams has got a schedule and he calls me almost every day at 9 o’clock,” said the 6-2 rising senior from Camden (Miss.) Velma Jackson in between games Thursday at the adidas Gauntlet Finale.

Weatherspoon caught the UNC staff’s eye in the spring, and Williams offered him in May. Since then, the communication has been frequent between the two.

“We talk about recruiting, and how I play – he loves how I get up and down,” Weatherspoon said.

Weatherspoon was initially scheduled to unofficially visit three ACC schools – UNC, NC State, Louisville - in June, but family issues forced him to postpone those visits.

He now aims to see those three campuses – starting with a trip to the state of North Carolina – in August.

“That’s the current plan,” Weatherspoon said. “Right after the July period they’ll be the first visit I go to, so I’ll be on those two (visits) for sure.

“There’s a lot going on with my mom right now, but I know for a fact everything will be okay and I’ll be there after July.”

Weatherspoon spoke highly of the ACC’s pedigree and why those three programs are prominent members of his finalists.

“Very excited (to visit them) – UNC, NC State, the ACC is the best basketball conference, so it’s real big to get on their campuses.”

When prompted for a list of the five schools that he thinks will comprise his official visit itinerary, Weatherspoon listed Ohio State, Mississippi State, Louisville, NC State, and UNC.
