Coby White Jumps on Offer, Commits to UNC Basketball

Roy Williams receives commitment from talented in-state scorer.

Coby White didn’t waste any time.

Just three days after Roy Williams offered the 2018 prospect a scholarship, White accepted and verbally committed to UNC. He chose the Tar Heels over early offers from Virginia, Iowa State, Tennessee, Clemson and Wake Forest.

White, a 6-4 guard from Wilson (N.C.) Greenfield, joins Rechon “Leaky” Black as UNC commitments in the rising junior class.

UNC’s recruitment of White started slow, but took off after impressive performances during the April evaluation period with his CP3 16U team, which also features offered 2019 wing Wendell Moore. White performed well in front of Williams and assistants C.B. McGrath and Steve Robinson on multiple occasions. In July, Williams logged several viewings of White and CP3 in Augusta, Ga. and Las Vegas.

“Few players on the 16-under circuit impressed as much as Coby White in terms of scoring,” said lead Inside Carolina recruiting analyst Rob Harrington. “A slender guard with a slightly herky-jerky game, White unleashes long bombs to stretch defenses and changes speeds with his dribble to create driving opportunities. He’s also a fine handler and passer with a solid frame to build upon for the college level.”

On June 20, Greenfield head coach Rob Salter, White and his family took an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill.

During the visit, White played pickup with current Tar Heels Joel Berry, Kennedy Meeks, Nate Britt, Justin Jackson, Tony Bradley, Brandon Robinson, Isaiah Hicks, Rasheed Wallace, Raymond Felton and Tyler Zeller.

It was the unofficial visit, sources tell Inside Carolina, that turned White’s recruitment in the Tar Heels’ favor. UNC’s players were impressed by White’s speed and athleticism, as well as his intensity and motor.
