"When he first met Michael Waddell two months ago, A.J. Alford called it the happiest day of his life. Monday might be atop A.J.'s list now, after he visited UNC football practice, got a ball signed by Waddell and got a group cheer from the rest of the team. A.J., 15, has myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke -- or MELAS -- a genetic disorder that began afflicting him two years ago. It is unknown how much longer he will live, which is why Monday was so important to him."
