UNC-FSU: John Bunting

UNC head coach John Bunting addressed the media following his Tar Heels' 37-0 loss to the Florida State Seminoles at Kenan Stadium, UNC's season- and home-opener.

After so much talk about FSU being "down" the past couple of years, do you feel like they are back?

I never doubted them one single bit.

Is this the most impressive Chris Rix has looked to you?

I said going into the game that Chris Rix is a very fine quarterback. Is this the most impressive? I think he's been impressive before. This guy has won some ball games.

What are your first impressions of Ronnie McGill in a game situation?

I'm really happy with Ronnie McGill. He's going to be a good player. He's strong, he sees things. He's going to be a really fine player for us. He has a chance to be a 1,000-yard rusher, which we'd like to have.

Is he now the number one back?

I don't know about that. We'll evaluate that sometime tomorrow.

When you looked at the kids in the eye, after the game tonight, what did you see—how did they handle it?

I think some handled it well; others did not. The tape doesn't lie. We'll watch all the tape. I wanted to make sure everyone gave a total effort. That will be evaluated. I do believe we'll play better, and we'll learn something from this.

Dan Orner missed two kicks. One was pretty long, but both were make-able. Were you disappointed in that?

I'm sure he's disappointed, just as we are. He's a guy who kicked well last year and helped us win at least two ball games, with the Duke kick and the big kicks at Syracuse. I expect that he'll bounce right back. He works hard. He works as hard as anybody on our team.

They rushed for 236 yards. What are your feelings?

That was the disappointing part of our defense last year – that people were able to run on us. I was a little nervous about that, coming into this game. They have a good running attack – three runners who can go in and play and an offensive line that's big. Once again, the majority of those runs, when the game was in question in the first half and the beginning of the second half, were on the perimeter. They have great speed. We have to find a way to get our younger players playing for us before the season is over.

How did you feel about your special teams?

I want the kickers to make the kicks. The punters punted well. David Wooldridge boomed on, and it got returned. We didn't do a very good job by our gunners. It was our third group of gunners, and I'm going to take a look at that too. If those guys can't give better effort and execute better technique, they won't be on the field. I'll put somebody else out there. They was a great kick, and we should have had the guy trapped, but we didn't do it.

What's the number one thing on your mind that you guys have to do this week in practice to get better?

We have to tackle better, and on offense we have to find ways to not only drive the ball but find ways to score.
