Commitment Q&A: DL Xach Gill Liked 'Everything' About UNC

Xach Gill committed to UNC over Virginia Tech during a ceremony on Monday afternoon. The 6-foot-5, 277-pound defensive lineman from Wake Forest (N.C.) High discussed his decision with Inside Carolina following the announcement...

Xach Gill Commitment Q&A

When did you make the decision?

"I made the decision, probably I'd say, last weekend."

What was the determining factor?

"I would just say everything that UNC is about -- how they develop the players on and off the field. And it's a family affair; my family felt real comfortable there. My mom is right down the street; she can come see me play my games. I like the way Coach [Tray] Scott takes his defensive linemen and molds them to be exactly how he sees fit and basically what they want them to be."

You took official visits to both UNC and Virginia Tech. What role did those experiences play?

"The official visits, they just gave me a different look on the schools and [seeing it] from the academic standpoint."

When did you let the staff know?

"I let them know at the beginning of last week."

Who did you let know and what was their reaction?

"I told Coach Scott and I told Coach [Larry] Fedora. And Coach Fedora said I made his weekend. It was a good experience."

How has this weekend been with making this decision on Monday after winning a state championship on Saturday?

"It was basically a relief. This whole weekend has been a blessing. It just puts a cherry on top to stay in state and play for the community and everybody I've been playing for for four years."

How does it feel getting this decision out of the way?

"It's a relief. Now I can focus on finishing up school and then enrolling in school and playing."

How much did Darius Hodge try to recruit you to NC State?

"This whole season."

I noticed that Hodge, an NC State pledge, had a UNC shirt on.

"Yea, that wasn't easy [for him]. He asked about it and I went ahead and let him know [my decision], because he wanted to support me."

Was that his shirt or did he borrow it?

"Oh no, that's not his shirt. That was my shirt."

After being teammates for the last four years, you and Hodge will play against each other for the next four years...

"I love him, but I told him it's going to be a battle out there. It's going to be fun."

Did any of UNC's commits reach out to you?

"Jordon [Riley] and Jake [Lawler] hit me up. Jake hit me up last night and we were talking."

The two commitments you've mentioned are fellow D-linemen from NC. What are your thoughts on being a part of that group?

"North Carolina born and raised guys. There's a lot of pride in North Carolina, so we're going to take pride in everything that we do."

Which coaches at UNC did you connect with that helped you make this decision?

"Definitely Coach Scott, Coach Fedora, and Coach [Gene] Chizik throughout the process. I talked to them a lot."

When are you enrolling?

"I'm going to enroll next semester."

Why did you decide to enroll early?

"I think it's the best decision just to go ahead and get me ready for college life and everything that I'm going to have to go through."

What have the coaches said as far as opportunity?

"They've always said the opportunity is on the table for me to grab. I just have to work real hard."

You played defensive end in a three-man front. Where does UNC project you to play?

"Depending on the situation, I could play inside or outside. They're probably going to start me out at inside."

Do you have a position preference?

"No preference -- just wherever I can make an impact."

Have you spoken to Naz Jones?

"I talked to Naz right before the Middle Creek game [Dec. 9], I want to say. He texted me asking how everything was going. He told me about his announcement that he made. I was happy for him and he was happy for me."
