A day after the season finale, M.J. Stewart decided he's not done in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heel junior cornerback, who had seven tackles in Friday's Sun Bowl loss to Stanford, announced on Saturday that he'll remain at UNC for his senior year.
“After gathering as much information as possible and discussing the situation with my family, I have decided to return to Carolina for my senior season,” Stewart said in a statement. “I appreciate Coach Fedora and the staff for their guidance throughout this process and I look forward to being a senior leader next season. It’s an honor to represent UNC and compete for a championship with my teammates.”
Stewart had 66 tackles in 2016, including 3.5 for loss, and led UNC with 11 pass breakups and 11 defended.
The Arlington, Va. native earned second-team All-ACC honors as a sophomore and honorable mention as a junior.
He is third in school history with 29 career pass breakups.
