CBS Sports Digital To Acquire Scout Media

Inside Carolina's contracted network is changing ownership.

NEW YORK — CBS Sports Digital announced Wednesday that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Scout Media. Scout will become part of CBS Sports Digital’s multi-platform offerings, which include and the CBS Sports apps for mobile and connected TV devices, as well as 247Sports, MaxPreps, CBS Sports fantasy games, and SportsLine. Scout’s team-focused and recruiting coverage will complement 247Sports’ already industry-leading network of college and pro team sites and its subscription recruiting information services.

CBS Sports Digital ended 2016 as the fastest-growing top ten digital sports property, according to comScore, with 247Sports driving 43% growth over 2015 in average monthly uniques. CBS Sports Digital acquired 247Sports in January 2016, following a partnership that began in 2013 to integrate 247Sports’ premium football and basketball recruiting content into CBS Sports coverage across digital platforms.

Inside Carolina will remain a contracted partner under Scout's new ownership.

Inside Carolina has been “The Independent Voice of UNC Sports” since 1994 and the biggest site on the Scout network since 2001. The publication's staff is composed of experienced, professional journalists whose job is to provide its readers with objective, independent coverage of Tar Heel sports and recruiting. The publication is independently owned and operated, and is not affiliated with the University. It is fully credentialed by UNC, the ACC and the NCAA.

Buck Sanders, President of Inside Carolina

“We expect business as usual for Inside Carolina, with the same great content, same terrific staff, and same delivery of news, analysis, and commentary our readers have come to expect. Though Scout has made multiple transitions in ownership in the past 16 years, Inside Carolina has remained committed to a specific mission as an independently owned publisher.

“From our conversations with CBS, the current platform, message boards, and overall experience will not be changed in the very near future. When you wake up tomorrow, Inside Carolina will look just like Inside Carolina. We will be working in partnership with CBS in the coming weeks and months on ways we can improve that overall experience over the long haul by developing a modern, stable and versatile platform.

“As one of the original Scout sites, we’ve built relationships with the team at Scout, with many of those relationships going back 16 years. They’ve become, in many cases, not just colleagues, but friends. Fortunately many of those relationships will be able to continue under the new management. For those that won’t, we wish them well in their new ventures.

“We’re excited about partnering with CBS as a publisher and look forward to working with their team. It brings a degree of long-term stability that frankly we’ve not had in the past with a network. We’re also excited about their vision of where the industry is headed, and their willingness to reach out to us for our feedback and input. As always, we’ll reach out to our users for their feedback as well, informing them of any forthcoming changes as they develop.

“For now, just expect more of what you’ve become accustomed to as a user and reader of Inside Carolina.”

Shannon Terry, CEO of 247Sports

“Our robust team-focused model, featuring a deep roster of national and regional insiders and analysts, will now be even stronger with the addition of Scout. Scout’s talented group of publishers and highly engaging, team-specific content will be a significant asset as we continue to grow and expand our audience of passionate fans and deliver a more extensive product offering to our members.

“Inside Carolina is the best of the best and has been one of the top three premium brands along with (Alabama) and (Ohio State) in the team site market for decades. It is a pleasure to work with and learn from Buck Sanders, Ben Sherman and their entire staff.

“Inside Carolina has tremendous respect as a news source and news breaker not only in the Carolina market, but in national media as well. They are the blue print for how a team publication should be run and the gold standard for our industry.”

Jeffrey Gerttula, Senior VP and GM of CBS Sports Digital

“We are very pleased to bring Scout Media into the CBS Sports Digital family and add their portfolio of team coverage to our premium, team-focused content offerings driven by 247Sports. This acquisition will fit perfectly into our goal to provide engaging content, from the national to the team level, for sports fans, and will enable us to deliver more value to individual team fanbases across all screens and devices, as well as create exciting cross-platform advertising opportunities.”

Craig Amazeen, President of Scout Media

“We are pleased with today’s results and look forward to receiving the requisite Court approval. I’d like to congratulate CBS 247 Inc. on the successful acquisition of a unified and motivated network of talented publishers, experts and employees.”
