UNC OL Commit Avery Jones Didn't Have Reason to Wait

Avery Jones pledged to UNC late Tuesday night. Inside Carolina visited the 6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive lineman from Havelock (N.C.) High to discuss his decision.

Avery Jones Commitment Q&A

Why did you decide to commit to UNC?

"I was thinking about it for a while and I just decided to commit. I liked the coaches -- Coach Kap [Chris Kapilovic]. And I liked the campus. And I like the football program; they're going up and getting better every year."

Speaking of Coach Kap, what impact did your relationship with him have on your decision?

"It had a big impact. Relationships are a big deal and we had a great relationship for a commitment. We talk all the time."

Your most recent visit to UNC was the elite junior day on March 4. Did that push you over the edge?

"I guess you could say that. It wasn't a big factor, but it wasn't the main reason I did it."

It seemed like you were on the verge of a commitment at any moment within the last year. What made you choose 10 o'clock on Tuesday night?

"I like Tuesdays, I guess. [Laughs]

"I don't know. I felt like I should do it. I didn't have a reason to wait anymore, I guess. I was talking to my mom about it that night and we just decided that it was the right move for me."

Coach Kap and Larry Fedora were on spring break when you called to commit, but I'm sure they were happy to step away to take your call. How did the commitment go down and what were their reactions?

"Yea, Coach Kap was in New York. They seemed pretty excited, both of them. I was talking to Coach Kap first and then we three-way'd with Coach Fedora. They both seemed pretty excited."

Where does Kapilovic envision you playing along the offensive line?

"He sees me more like a guard or center."

You've played mostly tackle in high school. What do you think about moving inside, especially to center where you'll have the added responsibility of snapping?

"I used to play center a lot in Pop Warner, but since Pop Warner I haven't played it. But, I feel like it doesn't really matter to me. I just want to play."

How firm is this commitment? Will you visit any other schools?

"I think I'm going to visit Virginia Tech, but I don't think I'm really going to visit a lot of schools after."

When's the next time you'll be back at UNC?

"I don't really have a set date. I might go back to [Fedora's] Freak Show. Maybe I'll visit before than."

You're UNC's only in-state pledge. Do you play on doing any recruiting?

"I'm pretty sure I can do some recruiting. I'll have to get some names."
