Gilchrist spurns Pack, chooses Terps

Two weeks ago, it seemed like a commitment from John Gilchrist to N.C. State was inevitable.

In fact, the Virginian-Pilot prematurely reported on Sept. 8 that Gilchrist had in fact chosen the Wolfpack.

But on Sunday, the 6-2 point guard from Virginia Beach (VA) Salem HS told the Virginian-Pilot that he had committed to Maryland.

"There was a lot of talk about the (unstable) coaching situation (at N.C. State)," he told the newspaper. "It was very tense there. At Maryland it was very laid back and it suited my personality." (V-P Link)

A tough loss for Herb Sendek and a great get for Gary Williams, who now has Steve Blake's successor lined up.

Gilchrist is ranked No. 30 in our Consensus Rankings.

We shot some good footage of Gilchrist at the Glaxo Invitational last December. To view the highlight reel, click here. The file is 1.5MB, so the download time will take a while if you have a phone connection.
