UNC Radio Personality Loses His Life

According to reports on AM-1360(WCHL), Stephen Gates, Tar Heel Sports Network football sideline reporter and women's basketball and baseball play-by-play man, was struck and killed in an auto accident late Friday night/early Saturday morning.

He apparently had a flat tire in the area of the I-40/I-85 split in Greensboro, got out of his car, and was struck by a Cadillac Escalade. The vehicle then fled the scene but was later stopped in Raleigh due to reports of the license plate number by witnesses at the scene.

Gates, 27, was the longtime play-by-play voice for the Tar Heel baseball and women's basketball teams. He also had been the sideline reporter for the Tar Heel Sports Network's football broadcasts for the last five seasons.
