"It was good, I really enjoyed it," he said.
A native of Austin, Buckman already knew the Longhorn campus pretty well, but was able to see a little more during the official visit.
"I got to see a lot of the behind the scenes stuff," he said, adding that he got a tour of the renovated basketball arena, the Erwin Center.
As was the case during his trip to Chapel Hill, the students made a concerted effort in Austin to acknowledge him while at the Longhorn football game on Saturday.
"The Hellraisers [UT's student-fan organization] ran down with t-shirts with my name on it, and there were a lot of signs that said ‘The Buck Stops Here,'" Buckman said.
How did the Texas visit compare with last weekend in Chapel Hill?
"It was about the same," he said, "but the tradition at Carolina is unbeatable."
With UCLA and Kansas no longer in the picture, Buckman will decide between Texas and North Carolina. After returning from his visit to Tar Heel country, he said that Carolina perhaps held a slight lead ("As of right now (I don't have a leader), but if there was one, it'd probably be Carolina right now."), though Texas could change that.
Does Carolina lead?
"No … it's about the same," he said. "Texas did a really good job."
We asked Clint Jackson for his take, after having conducted the interview.
"It sounds like to me that it's going to come down to family ties versus tradition," he said, referring to each school's advantage. "He sounded like he had a really good time at Texas, but he didn't sound as blown away as after the Carolina visit."
When asked about the analysis of the decision being between the hometown, family connection with Texas and the Tar Heel basketball tradition, he said that assessment was "right on."
Interestingly, though, Buckman said his parents weren't showing any major preference.
"No, they like both schools," he said.
And as for a preference in coaching staffs, Buckman had the following to say about the two head coaches.
Matt Doherty – "He's a great guy. He can really relate to me because he's the same size as me and we play the same position."
Rick Barnes – "I really like him. He's a really laid back guy – at least he is to me."
Buckman is sticking to his decision schedule, with an announcement to be made in the next couple of weeks.
"I'm thinking I'm going to decide in a week or two," he said. "That's what I'm trying to do."
