Crompton visits Chapel Hill

If you are wondering why the Tar Heels' coaching staff has seemed to "call off the dogs" in recruiting quarterbacks for the class of 2004, just head to the mountains of North Carolina one Friday night to catch a Tuscola High School football game.

What you will notice is that the best pure pocket quarterback in the state of North Carolina is not a senior. He is a 6-3, 189-pound junior, Jonathan Crompton. Crompton has the best arm the Carolinas have seen since Chris Leak, plus the size Leak lacked, minus the Division I-A caliber receivers.

With half of his junior season still left to play, Crompton has received offers from North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Clemson, among others. However, when it comes to favorites this gunslinger isn't showing his hand.

"As of right now they are all about the same," said Crompton. "I'm just taking it all in."

This past weekend Crompton had some time to soak in a game at Chapel Hill as the Tar Heels hosted the Arizona State Sun Devils. Despite the devastating loss, Crompton enjoyed his stay.

"It was exciting," exclaimed the junior. "I loved it!"

The trip included the normal campus tour in addition to talks with Coach Powell and Coach Tranquil. Don't expect Crompton to make any more unofficial visits this season, his Tuscola Mountaineers are 8-0 and have their eyes set on a North Carolina Class 3A State Championship.

"I'm done for this year; I'm going to concentrate on our season for the rest of our year," stated Crompton who has passed for 1,131 yards and eight touchdowns with only three interceptions.

As Crompton concentrates on the rest of his junior season, Tar Heel fans need to look towards next year in regards to recruiting quarterbacks and hope on signing day 2005 Crompton's fax machine will be dialing the office of Coach Bunting.
