The 2001-02 men's basketball season gets underway for the University of North Carolina next weekend, with the second annual "Midnight With the Heels" set for Oct. 12 at Carmichael Auditorium on the UNC campus.
Members of the Carolina squad will be introduced to the crowd and play an intrasquad scrimmage in front of UNC students and Tar Heel fans.
Seating is limited, so spectators should arrive early. Admission is free and all seating will be general admission. Doors open at 6 p.m. Doors will be closed when Carmichael reaches its capacity of 10,000.
Also part of the evening's festivities will be Tar Heel women's soccer and volleyball games. The women's soccer team will face nationally-ranked Florida State at 7 p.m. at adjacent Fetzer Field and the volleyball team will square off with Kansas beginning at 9 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium.
Public parking will be available at the Ramshead, Boshamer Stadium, Bell Tower, Smith Center and NC Highway 54 lots on the UNC campus.
The festivities in Carmichael Auditorium will include a 3-on-3 basketball game between a team of UNC undergraduates and the Carolina coaching staff and former Tar Heel stars returning to Chapel Hill to serve as special guest coaches.
Also included will be an appearance by the 2001-02 UNC women's basketball team and a chance for students to win tuition, books and other free prizes. The evening culminates with the first practice of the 2001-02 season for the men's basketball squad.
Midnight with the Heels will begin at 11 p.m., or following the conclusion of the volleyball match should it run past 11:00.
