Noel surgery successful

North Carolina sophomore David Noel had successful surgery on his right thumb on Wednesday, after he tore ligaments in the thumb in practice a week ago.

"We were a thin team to begin with, and this just makes us thinner ... David would have either started or been the first guy off the bench," Roy Williams said Saturday. "We need David Noel. There's no question about that, because our depth is almost non-existent."

Noel averaged 5.9 points and 3.5 rebounds a year ago.
