Georgia safety back healthy

Matt West of Blairsville, Ga., a Top 100 defensive back according to The Insiders, has recovered from a mid-season knee injury. In at tailback, he ran for 157 yards and scored two touchdowns in his last outing with Union Co.

"It was just a bad sprain that wouldn't heal," said Ken West, Matt's father. "He's back to 100-percent."

West, who is also a baseball standout, is an excellent student, who says academics will play a major role in his final decision. He has set official visits with Princeton and Cornell, and we'll likely take a third to Columbia, Yale, Georgia, UNC or Wake Forest, he said.

His stats through nine games in 2003: 163 carries for 1,048 yards, six receptions 146 yards, 22 kick returns for 422 yards, ten touchdowns and 97 tackles.

As a junior, West had 164 carries for 908 yards and nine touchdowns, but only had 27 carries combined during the first three games of the 10-game season. He had six kickoff returns for 235 yards and a touchdown. On defense, he recorded 91 tackles, 5 sacks, forced four fumbles, recovered five fumbles and had an interception.
