"Midnight with the Heels" was an event to usher in the start of the college basketball season, but just as importantly, it was a chance to appeal to a collection of Carolina recruits on-hand.
Before the start of the festivities, David Cason, UNC's Director of Basketball Operations, paraded six high school stars by the student section to their seats in the front row at center court.
The six recruits were:
Raymond Felton - 6-1, Sr., PG, already committed to UNC.
Brad Buckman - 6-9, Sr., PF, on his second visit in three weeks to Chapel Hill.
Jason Fraser - 6-9, Sr., C, on an official visit sitting with his mother.
Trevor Ariza - 6-7, Jr., WF, Los Angeles star on an unofficial visit.
Major Wingate - 6-10, Jr. PF/C, Florence, SC native.
Marquis Cooke - 6-1, So., PG, Va. product who shined with the Boo Williams AAU squad this summer.
As the players walked to their seats, the students erupted with applause and chants of "We Want Fraser" and "We Want Buckman." Also on display was a big poster that read: "Future of Carolina Basketball," with mock jerseys of Felton, Fraser, Buckman and Ariza. Buckman fought to hold back a large grin.
Three students across the court from the recruits painted "We Want Fraser" on their backs, with a fifth student painting "$Man" on his back ($Man=Buck-man). Behind the scorer's table, a student displayed a mock Sports Illustrated cover that read "Fab 4 = Final Four" with pictures of Fraser, Rashad McCants, Felton and Buckman (see photo below).
During a break in the action later in the evening, loud chants again rang through Carmichael: "We Want Fraser," "We Want Buckman," and "We Love Raymond."
Stay tuned to IC for reports on each recruit's visit.
